Music and Art:

Music is not just simply involved with the teaching learning production
and marketing of music, but is supportive of the promotion of local
artists and craftspeople, where there is a direct link to our own work.
An example is the work of Octogenarian Jos Peart living independently in Ross.
Jos commenced classical guitar lessons with Pete Goodall in 2004, and it quickly became apparent that his talents extended into many areas of the arts. As well as a brilliant painter in oils, he is an excellent short story writer and philosopher.
Jos
came originally from Jamaica in the 1950s and spent his working life in
Birmingham, where he studied at the Birmingham College of Art and was
exhibited, before retiring to Ross.
He has over two hundred paintings to his name, ranging from landscapes of the West Indies and Great Britain to portraits and beautiful semi-abstract depictions of philosophical concepts, particularly those with a spiritual underpinning.
His
representations of life in Jamaica are vivid expressions of the
Developing World, and the portrait of a nude white bather with her
black fully clad chaperone speaks volumes about the distant world of
the former British Empire.
What is exceptional about his work is the light, which seems, without glaring to illuminate every corner of his work. Having been in the tropics, it feels to me that every painting is touched with Jos’ memory of Jamaican sunshine.
In short his oils are warm,
exceptionally clear and will feature not only on Speakeasy CDs but will
be available for purchase. A larger catalogue is being produced in time
for an exhibition at Ross library in September 2005.
Paintings are available for purchase. Please contact Peter Goodall on +44 (0)1432 343808
